Linglestown construction update

Based on today's walk around the village, the focus of construction appears to be redoing Blue Mountain Parkway between Linglestown Road and the new bypass (pictured). This job needs to be done to match the elevation of the parkway with Linglestown Road, which was lowered by about two feet when it was rebuilt.

Next week final repaving is tentatively scheduled to start on Linglestown Road.

The entire project is on track to be completed sometime in August.

Persistence pays off in search for dog

I received word that a lost greyhound named Leah (pictured) was rescued after 19 days on the loose in the Colonial Park area. Information about the search for Leah was the subject of a recent blog post. Below is an excerpt from an email sent to the Gazette:

We had been able to draw her into feeding stations from time to time, so she was getting some nourishment. Unfortunately she is extremely thunder-phobic so every time we were on the verge of trapping her, a storm would hit and she be off and running again and we were back at square one until the next sighting.

At roughly 4:00 am on Friday, June 17, she showed up at her home and barked to be let in. She was dehydrated, had some lacerations/abrasions, some tick bites and had lost weight, but was miraculously healthy considering her situation.

Linglestown rides Frailey's bat to win

In East Shore Twilight League action Sunday, second baseman Mark Frailey banged out two doubles and a homer to lead the Linglestown Juggernauts to a 4–3 victory over first-place Palmyra.

Adam Chernicoff (pictured above), who plays college baseball at Lafayette College in Easton, was the winning pitcher. After Palmyra scored two runs to make it a one-run game in the seventh inning, shortstop Sam Phillips relieved Chernicoff and got the final out.

Linglestown (6–5–1, 4th place) plays its next home game at Koons Park this Thursday, June 30, against Steelton. First pitch will be hurled at 6 pm.

Nott leads Linglestown to diamond wins

Linglestown's entry in the East Shore Twilight League, the Juggernauts (5–5–1), broke out of their early season funk this week with a pair of wins over teams ahead off them in the standings.

In a make-up game Wednesday in Middletown, Sam Nott, a CD grad who plays college ball at Mount St. Mary's University in Maryland, smacked a two-run homer in the fifth to lead the Juggernauts to an 8–2 victory. Susquehanna Twp. product Joe Leo, a pitcher during the school year with Lafayette College, picked up the win with seventh-inning relief from Sam Phillips, another Susquehanna Twp. grad who now plays infield at Shippensburg University.

At Koons Park on Thursday, the Juggernauts dueled in a see-saw game with Lawnton. With the game knotted at five at the end of regulation, Linglestown won it 6–5 in the bottom of the eighth on a walk off single by Sam Nott that scored Natt Shroy, a 2009 CD grad.

Tom Healy, a CD product who plays with Nott at Mount St. Mary's, and Susquehanna Twp. grad Kyle Hollingsworth hit solo roundtrippers for the Juggernauts, and Josh Muscalus got the win in relief of Pete Hayden, the team's ace pitcher.

NEXT HOME GAME – Tomorrow (Sunday, Jume 26) against first-place Palmyra, 5 pm

Linglestown construction update

Notes from last week's Village of Linglestown Committee meeting:

* Final paving of Linglestown Road is expected to occur just after
July 4. The work will be done with flagmen directing traffic.

* Concern continues about the need for light shields on the new street lights to cut down on light directed toward homes along Linglestown Road. PPL wants to be paid for the shields, but township officials thought the shields were included in the original contract. Lower Paxton Township manager George Wolfe said he would contact PPL to seek a resolution on this issue.

* The question was raised about the condition of the portion of Blackberry Alley that runs behind Lio's Pizza and Sub Shop that was not part of a recent paving project. Township manager Wolfe clarified that the newly paved alleys are township property and were paved using funds from government grants, but the township does not have funds to improve the eastern portion of Blackberry Alley. The village committee voted to make a formal request to the township that the unpaved section of Blackberry Alley be repaired when funds become available.

Linglestown roundabouts now open

I checked out the square roundabout during the 6 pm hour.

There was limited traffic at that time. Motorists in general appeared to be unsure how to properly maneuver through the roundabout. I saw a couple drivers traveling westbound on Rt. 39 who didn't realize that they had to yield to cars in the roundabout and entered it without first checking for other cars to their left.

Be sure to slow down when approaching the roundabout, and look left for traffic already in the roundabout before entering the circle.

French students to meet Linglestown families

LEC, a French student organization with American coordinators, invites you to welcome a French teen into your home this summer. Two groups of students will spend three weeks in south central Pennsylvania this summer, one July 7-27 and the other August 4-24. You can represent the United States by showing these young Europeans how we live our daily lives.

The students are coming to practice their English and to immerse themselves in American culture and family life. Ideal host families will have children at home, but all are welcome to apply. Homes without children may provide opportunities for students to interact with others of their age, such as neighbors, church youth groups, and sports teams or clubs.

Each student speaks English, is fully insured, and has his or her own spending money. They enjoy a variety of sports and activities and are anxious to learn about their American counterparts.

Host families will have the opportunity to show the students around our region, too, rich with history, recreation, and entertainment. In turn, the families learn much about the students’ home regions in France.

Families are reimbursed $80 per week to assist with expenses.

LEC has planned visits to the United States since 1972. Over the past three years, LEC students have visited families in Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Lebanon, Perry, and York counties. Last year, four students lived with families in Linglestown.

For complete information on the LEC homestay program, contact Linglestown resident John Robinson, LEC Capital Region coordinator, at (717) 545-2979 or e-mail.

Sandlot baseball: Linglestown wins home opener

After dropping their first two games on the road, the Linglestown Juggernauts rolled over Palmyra 13–2 Sunday in East Shore Twilight League action at Koons Park.

The Juggernauts took command of the game by scoring six runs in the second inning on one hit, five walks, a hit batter and three Palmyra errors. Linglestown's designated hitter Nate Shroy put the game out of reach in the fourth inning with a three-run homer.

Third baseman Bryan Stovall had a stellar game for the Juggernauts at the plate with three singles and a run batted in.

Veteran Linglestown pitcher Pete Hayden went the distance, giving up only four hits and three walks.

The Linglestown Juggernauts have had very successful teams in recent years. They won the league playoffs in 2007, and the regular season and playoff championships in 2008 and 2009. Last season they finished second in the regular season and were defeated in the championship playoff series by Middletown.

If you enjoy baseball, be sure to check out the Juggernauts. Most of the players have college baseball experience.

The Juggernauts are scheduled to play two games next Sunday at Koons Park – Valley View at 2 pm and Hummelstown at 5 pm.
