This photo was snapped Saturday morning by a Gazette reader who lives on Ironwood Drive in Blue Meadows Farm, a housing development located just north of Linglestown at the foot of Blue Mountain.

Linglestown square sports new flagpole

I walked through the village around 2 pm this afternoon to make a couple stops and the roundabout in the square looked like it did yesterday – no flagpole. When I started home from Roasters an hour later, ta-da ... just like magic, the pole was in place.

Linglestown improvement project winding down

The punch list of items to complete the Linglestown project that started in November 2009 is growing smaller by the day. Below are findings from my inspection walk today:

– The cement base for the new flagpole is in place at the roundabout in the square.

– Four trash receptacles (pictured) were placed near the following businesses in the square: Lio's Pizza & Sub Shop, Eagle Hotel, Linglestown Restaurant and St. Thomas Roasters.

- The old entrance on Route 39 to Blue Mountain Parkway has been opened for westbound traffic only.

- The huge piles of debris in the farm field located just east of the village have been cleared away.

Golfers needed to tee it up on Oct. 3

If you like to chase a little white ball from time to time, please consider joining me at Linglestown Fire Company's first golf outing on Monday, Oct. 3.

The volunteer firefighters are trying to raise funds to upgrade their engine room building and this event is going to be a fun way to help them out.

The donation to participate has been lowered to $75.

* Residents on Elmer and Elaine avenues in Linglestown now have long-awaited freshly paved streets. The neighborhood got hit with a double whammy over the last couple years when sewer and water lines were replaced.

* St. Thomas United Church of Christ in Linglestown recently dedicated a special mural in the church's nursery in memory of Melissa Yarosh, who died in April 2006 at age 14 in a tragic car and pedestrian accident on N. Mountain Road.

* The Linglestown Softball Association is gearing up to improve the field located next to the tennis courts. Work is expected to start soon on new dugouts, a backstop and a storage building that will include a concession stand. The association is fully funding the work. Fight back against local crime

If you're a regular Gazette reader and follower of the blog's Twitter feed, you've probably noticed over the last couple of years a steady increase of news stories about thefts and burglaries in Lower Paxton Township, especially in the Forest Hills area. In fact, five more burglaries were reported to local police just last weekend.

Thanks to community watchdog group SWAN and the Lower Paxton Police Department, you have an opportunity to arm yourself with how-to info that could keep the bad guys from breaking into your home, cars and backyard shed.

The group will host an event this Monday, Sept. 19, at 7 pm that will feature a detective and a patrol officer sharing their insights on crime prevention for residential neighborhoods.

The presentation will be held at Epiphany Lutheran Church, 1100 Colonial Road,
Harrisburg.

Linglestown crash takes out streetlights

A motorist fleeing police on eastbound Route 39 lost control at a roundabout early Sunday and destroyed two streetlights and a sign at the fire hall. CLICK HERE for more details from WHTM abc27.

LP likely to lose water service due to flooding

I called United Water PA after a neighbor told me that she was told water service in the Linglestown area would be turned off at 7 pm tonight.

A United Water spokesperson said information about when an outage could occur did not come from the company, but service likely will be cut off when flood waters cover the pumps at their 6th Street station in Susquehanna Township. The pump station was beginning to flood in the 3 pm hour today, she said.

Also, United Water can not predict how long an outage would last. Dauphin County officials issued an advisory today that suggested stocking up enough water for 72 hours.

I made a water run early this afternoon and purchased water at Weis, Target and Home Depot. The Giant on Route 22 was sold out at the time of my visit.

Midstate supermarkets, including Giant, Karns Foods, Wegmans and Weis Markets report they have bottled water in stock with more shipments arriving, according to a report published by The Patriot-News this afternoon.

My daughter spotted a blimp just south of Linglestown earlier this week. The Patriot-News has details on the reason the aircraft showed up here.

Signs, signs, everywhere a sign

The new Linglestown makes me think of the classic rock hit used in the headline for this post.

Thanks to state highway regulations (or someone's interpretation of them), Linglestown and Mountain roads are cluttered with an overwhelming number of signs over a short distance.

In my opinion, this is one aspect of the improvement project that needs to be revisited by local and state authorities.

Linglestown to get new flagpole soon

The installation of a new flagpole is among the items on a small to-do list for the Linglestown improvement project. The contractor is expected to install the pole "soon," according to a report filed by community watchdog group SWAN.
