Linglestown Gazette: Village committee gets new job

Village committee gets new job

Now that the Route 39 improvement project is headed for final design, the Village of Linglestown Committee is ready to tackle a new task – zoning.

Simply put, zoning determines what kind of land uses are allowed in a specific area.

The committee’s goal is to make recommendations for special zoning regulations to help maintain the look and atmosphere of the historic section of the village. All zoning regulations developed by the committee would need to be approved by the Lower Paxton Township supervisors.

At the committee’s March 15 meeting, members responded to a request from Lower Paxton Township for feedback on two zoning issues:

* Recommended against allowing bring-your-own-bottle membership clubs in the village. Instead, members would like to discuss allowing BYOB at restaurants and other eateries.

* Strongly recommended against allowing drive-thru businesses – like bank branches and fast-food restaurants – in the village.

The committee's next meeting will be held on April 19 at 7 pm at Linglestown Fire Company's old firehouse.

What is the Village's territory?

The village historic district is roughly located along Route 39 from the old firehouse to the sharp curve at the eastern end of the town.

Beyond the historic village mentioned above, there are no official boundaries for the Linglestown area of Lower Paxton Township.

I'll take a crack at establishing who lives in Linglestown and who lives near Linglestown in a future blog post.

Cool, I'm just wondering inside what radius the Village of Linglestown is considered.

"Strongly recommended against allowing drive-thru businesses – like bank branches and fast-food restaurants – in the village."

Other than on Mountain Road, where else could a bank or fast-food restaurant fit in the village (short of tearing down buildings)?

My take is that the village committee's focus is on the historic village area.

Committee members cited John's Service Center, which is up for sale, as a possible location for a drive-thru business.

Also, as you point out, I'm pretty sure there are no regulations to prevent someone from tearing down buildings. That's what happened at the location of the new flower shop.

Is there a website for the Village of Linglestown committee?

The committee does not have a Web site. LP Township's Web site mentions the committee on this page:
