Linglestown Monday mixed bag

*** Updated Tuesday, 5/6/08 with store hours for Oriental Market

New business update Gazette contributor Q spotted a new gathering spot in the village, Olivia’s Tea Room located in the second floor of the building that houses Linglestown Flowers & Gifts. CLICK HERE for more info.

Today I checked out the food offerings at the newly opened Oriental Market and General Store located in the heart of the village square. The market is a small specialty grocery store that features oriental food supplies with an emphasis on items that can be used in Filipino dishes.

I had the pleasure of meeting the owner, Elomar Harder-Siennick, who goes by the nickname Jan. She is operating the market with the help of husband Jon and their two sons, Christopher and Oliver. Based on a Google search, Jan is employed in the state government's Office of the Budget. Jon is a member of Pennsylvania National Guard's 56 Stryker Brigade Combat Team that will be deployed to Iraq in early 2009. The mission will be Jon's second tour of duty in Iraq.

I encourage you to stop by and ask Jan to give you a quick tour. The store is open 4to 9 pm weekdays, 9 am to 9 pm Saturdays, and 10 am to 5 pm Sundays.

Speaking of food, Giant is gearing up to offer Web shopping at its Camp Hill store. If this service comes to the Colonial Commons or Linglestown Road stores, it would give village residents access to a full-service grocery store without the need to use a car. Could Web shopping become the new corner grocery store?

Lower Paxton meetings Lower Paxton Twp. supervisors will conduct a business meeting tomorrow night, May 6 at 7:30 pm, Township Municipal Center, 425 Prince Street. Comcast cable subscribers can view a live broadcast of the meeting on channel 20. CLICK HERE to view the agendal, and HERE for a preview of the expected vote on a zoning change for Sportman's Golf Golf by beat reporter T.W. Burger of The Patriot-News.

Also, tomorrow night the Lower Paxton Township Authority will conduct a special meeting at 7:30 pm at the Township Municipal Center to discuss the Linglestown Road sewer project.

CD sports The Lady Rams soccer team will play a Mid-Penn tournament of champions game tomorrow night, May 6, 7 pm against Waynesboro at Landis Field in Colonial Park. … CD's softball team is scheduled to play its first conference championship tournament game next Monday, May 12, 5 pm against Greencastle-Antrim at Heishman Field in Newville.

Up, up and away ... A hot air balloon passed by just south of the village this evening. The picture was taken in the area of the intersection of Wenrich Street and Warren Avenue. The treeline is located along the dirt road that goes to Linglestown Paintball Field.

On your article about St Thomas Village Store, you mentioned that Elomar's cildren are Christopher and Owen. Owen does not exist. The apparition that you saw was in fact, Oliver. And, I guess I am just an overburdened horse, that my wife forgot to mention, but I am Elomar's husband, Jon. I am in the PA National Guard, 56 Stryker Brigade Combat Team (SBCT) and we will deploy to Iraq in early 2009This will be my second trip to the sandbox.

Jon, thanks for the feedback, and more importantly, your service to our nation. The post has been corrected.
