Backyard news, 10.01.08

* Lower Paxton Twp. citizen watchdog group SWAN has posted a newsletter that reviews township meetings in August and September. Be sure to review it to see what’s happening, if anything, in your backyard. Below are a couple items of widespread interest that I culled from the newsletter:

– Representatives of Koons Pool, likely Walter Shatto and Chuck Barto, are tentatively scheduled to attend the Oct. 14 township supervisors workshop meeting to outline the pool’s reorganization plan. As a condition of getting a $5,000 grant to offset this year’s pool budget deficit, the supervisors requested a marketing plan and periodic status reports on pool membership efforts, a proposed budget for 2009 and a list of the board of directors including their terms.

– Another item that is likely to be discussed at the Oct. 14 meeting is a proposal by the township Planning Commission to create three Business Improvement Districts, including one in Linglestown.

* A cluster of Linglestown merchants located west of the square hope to convince township officials to improve the two alleys that parallel Linglestown Road – Raspberry and Blackberry lanes – prior to the planned village improvement and square project kicks into high gear. (Construction is tentatively slated to begin in March or April next year.) You can help make this happen by sending an e-mail to the township supervisors asking them to include paving of the alleys in the township’s 2009 budget.

* Gazette quickies ... T.W. Burger, Patriot-News beat reporter for LP and CD schools, is vacationing in Maine. … The legend of Linglestown’s Speedo man is growing (see thread #443). … Linglestown blogger Kim waxes poetic about her garden in autumn.

In response to the paving of Blackberry and Raspberry Lanes:

My property line stretches to meet Blackberry Lane, and the concept of having it paved is frankly, a scary one. Even in its current state of loose gravel, pock marked with potholes of varying sizes, people frequently traverse its grounds with speeds well above recommended limits…at times, approaching 40mph. There are moments when I have been out back washing my car and seen people slam on their breaks because they did not see me close to the road. Several times, if I had not been watching, I most certainly would have been hit. I cannot imagine how fast they would travel if it was a smooth surface the entire way.

In addition, a few local children will pass through the alley in order to reach the fields they ride in on their mini-motorcycles and golf carts. Not to mention the size of the alley only allows for one car at a time to go by, with few spots to pull over and allow a car to pass.

While I appreciate the need for a commercial establishment to provide ease of access for its customers, several residential homes line Blackberry Lane as well. And in my humble opinion, the paving of the alley would cause serious risks to those individuals and their families.

Solutions…unfortunately I do not have any readily available, and if the alley were to be paved, I would hope measures would be implemented to control speed. Not wanting to appear closed to the idea, I will leave you with one nice result from fresh pavement – I would no longer need to worry about a cloud of dust settling on my freshly washed car.

The first order of business for the new Koons Park pool reps is to go and clean up from this past summer. The lounge chairs are all still sitting out in the overgrown grass as if it will re-open tomorrow.
just a thought.

RE: Comment by Brian C.

You raise some good points. I suggest that you express your concerns to the township supervisors via e-mail. (e-mail link for the supervisors is located near the bottom of the post).

As you probably know, Raspberry Lane, which borders Koons Park, is paved from N. Mountain Road to Balthaser Street, and two-way traffic is allowed on a large section of the alley. Many motorists on N. Mountain Road who want to travel east on Rt. 39 use the alley as a way to avoid the square. Although I've observed drivers speeding, Raspberry Lane doesn't appear to cause hazardous conditions for motorists and pedestrians.

@Bill:

I find all sections of Blackberry Lane to be much more narrow than Raspberry. Meaning there are places on Raspberry to pull over to get buy but on Blackberry there are virtually none unless using someone's driveway.

Though not the forum for it, I would add that some of the worst offenders on Blackberry are the business owners themselves.
