Get into the arts ...
High school musical season kicks off this week with a presentation by Harrisburg Christian School of Oliver! on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, March 5–7, 7 pm in the school's Arts and Athletics Building. Tickets can be purchased at the door, or call 545-3728 ext. 101 to reserve seats. (Click the poster to view a larger version.)

Youth basketball tourney ...The first-ever Central Dauphin "Ram Slam" three-on-three basketball tournament will be held Saturday, March 21, at Central Dauphin High School for boys in grades 7 through 12. (registration form and rules)

Government watchdog ... Last Thursday, the township Zoning Hearing Board granted a request by Triple Crown Corporation to use the abandoned self-serve gas station (pictured) on N. Mountain Road next to the First National Bank of Marysville branch for a four-bay car wash. To construct the project, Triple Crown still needs the state to sign off on soil cleanup work that has been completed and obtain approval from the township supervisors for a land development plan. ... The Lower Paxton Twp. supervisors will conduct their first business meeting of March on Tuesday at the Municipal Center, 7:30 pm. You can view a live broadcast of the meeting on Comcast cable, channel 20. (agenda)

Let's get political ... State Sen. Jeff Piccola has issued an op-ed piece that explains his plan to offer college tuition relief that doesn't require Gov. Eddie Rendell legalizing and taxing video poker machines in taverns, bars and restaurants. ... State Rep. Ron Marsico and Lower Paxton Twp. resident and widely known political activist Eric Epstein are featured in a WHTM TV-27 report about taxpayer dollars being used to purchase Bibles and other holy books. ... On Saturday, I attended a gathering of Republicans at St. Thomas Roasters coffee house in Linglestown and learned that businessman Gary Gardner has been endorsed by Lower Paxton Republican Committee in the primary election race for township tax collector. It is unclear whether Diane Bair, the current tax collector, is going to run for re-election.

Reading some of the violations on the various restaurants I don't think are a big deal. But on the other hand some of the violations make me want to eat at home more and more.

Anonymous is right, not all of them are completely disturbing. It's understandable that some employees will forget to wash hands before donning gloves.

However, what really drew concern was the fact that chicken and beef was being stored above ready-to-eat vegetables.

Many establishments have a problem with keeping their can opener(s) clean, too.

I work in the food industry, so I know what's acceptable and what's not acceptable. Not sure if the state does surprise inspections of the restaurants, but at my food facility, we are given plenty of notice and make sure we fix any problems before the inspection. Not sure if these restaurants had the luxury of a heads up.

This may sound stupid but do all employees have to wear hair nets or hats even if they are bald? I know that one of the owners at ID is bald!!!

According to the 2001 Food Code, no - bald persons do not have to wear hairnets. However, most professional individuals who work around food (bald or not) will put a hairnet or hat on.

In the code:
Hair Restraints

2-402.11 Effectiveness.

(A) Except as provided in ¶ (B) of this section, food employees shall
wear hair restraints such as hats, hair coverings or nets, beard
restraints, and clothing that covers body hair, that are designed and
worn to effectively keep their hair from contacting exposed food; clean
equipment, utensils, and linens; and unwrapped single-service and
single-use articles.

(B) This section does not apply to food employees such as counter staff
who only serve beverages and wrapped or packaged foods, hostesses, and
wait staff if they present a minimal risk of contaminating exposed food;
clean equipment, utensils, and linens; and unwrapped single-service and
single-use articles.

Rob,
Thanks for the information. I was curious about that.

The above comments are related to a story link that has been deleted from this post. The report, which was not created by Linglestown Gazette, reviewed state health inspection reports for Lower Paxton Twp. restaurants.

The link was deleted because the report did not include comments and explanations from health inspectors and restaurant owners.

The link below goes to a database of state restaurant health inspections:

Everybody please encourage Gary Gardner to run for tax collector. I'm a republican, but Diane Bair is notorious for being inefficient. I recently refinanced my mortgage and the lawyer groaned when he saw her name. As he predicted, my tax check was sitting in a pile, meaning I had to pay my taxes twice and wait for her to figure things out. Apparently she has a bad reputation for just running a disorganized office. In her defense, I heard she doesn't get paid a whole lot either, so it's tough to be mad...it just might be worth trying someone else.
