Linglestown Gazette: Price of going 'green' could rise in Lower Paxton

Price of going 'green' could rise in Lower Paxton

Hauling crap from your yard and dumping it at Lower Paxton's compost site along Conway Road could soon include a trip to the Municipal Center – to pay a fee.

To offset shrinking state funding, Lower Paxton Twp. officials appear to be leaning toward charging fees to drop off yard waste and haul away leaf compost.

Based on a discussion Tuesday evening at the township supervisors' workshop meeting, the annual fees most likely would be $20 for residents and $300 for commercial landscapers. Also, a $5 one-day pass could be offered.

The fee schedule, which still needs to be formally adopted by the supervisors, could start in July with a 50-percent discount on the annual fees for 2009 only.

Watch the Gazette to find out when this issue is scheduled for a final vote.

Why hasn't the methane at the compost site ever been tapped and captured (to offset some of the operating cost)? A simple methane-operated generator could send power into the PPL grid (which must be reimbursed). There must be a state-sponsored grant program that would support start-up.
