Linglestown Gazette: Fees adopted for Lower Paxton compost facility

Fees adopted for Lower Paxton compost facility

Free use of Lower Paxton’s leaf waste compost facility on Conway Road will end on August 1. It’ll cost you $10 this year and $20 in 2010 for unlimited use of the facility.

The state recommended that Lower Paxton find new revenue sources to offset costs associated with running the compost facility, and the township supervisors Tuesday adopted a schedule of user fees for residents and commercial landscapers.

B² analysis: Charging businesses $150 this year and $300 starting in 2010 seems appropriate since they drop off large quantities of waste and haul away free compost and wood chips to sell to their customers.

However, the same logic doesn’t apply to residents. I doubt the residential fee will generate much revenue since most people use Waste Management’s curbside pick-up service to get rid of leaf waste and brush. It doesn't make sense to me to force a tiny percentage of township residents to make a special trip to the Municipal Center to fork over 20 bucks. (Fees won't be accepted at the compost facility.)
