Backyard news, 08.19.09

Lower Paxton in the news … Resurfacing work is under way on Route 22. … Three charged in gun incident last week at Sheetz on Linglestown Road. … Get to know Rusty Owens, legendary swimming coach at Colonial Golf and Tennis Club.

Are you ready for some football? … Varsity squads with the Linglestown Colts youth football program will open their season Sunday, Aug. 23, against the Susquehanna Indians. The first of three games at Susquehanna High School starts at 1 pm.

Roasters going green … The yard behind St. Thomas Roasters in Linglestown soon will have a rain garden thanks to the folks with Paxton Creek Watershed and Education Association. The goal of the project is to collect and treat stormwater runoff that comes off the roof of the coffee house. The watershed association constructed a rain garden last year in Koons Park next to the salt storage dome.

Quick hitters … According to a Q-Tip, the Sports City complex on Linglestown Road will soon be home to a Jigsy’s Old Forge Pizza and Restaurant. … Linglestown Fire Company spent some time Saturday at Metro Bank.

The rain garden sounds like a great idea. They put one up in Centennial Acres Neighborhood park and Township park that is attractive and catches pollution before entering the mountain creek.
