B2, your heart is in the right place, but I don't believe cutting 70 positions from a 900+ staff is draconian. The enrollment has declined. The district is doing what every other sector has had do these past several years.

Thanks for the feedback.

I agree, the use of the word "draconian" is a bit over the top, but the cuts are among the highest in the state. Plus, I'm not convinced that district officials seriously considered all options for retaining more teachers.

For example, as far as I know, no administrators were furloughed.

Here's the key point: The game has changed in public education and citizens need to get more involved to get a say in what happens moving forward.

This is especially the case locally because it appears that the CD board discusses most issues behind closed doors.

And remember, discussing issues behind closed doors is illegal in PA for school boards. the Sunshine Act mandates an open-meetings statute for public agencies. Perhaps someone should give this document to the CD school board as a reference. It is also good knowledge for the public to have: http://www.eric.ed.gov/PDFS/ED364989.pdf

I will be there for a cup of joe as well. I have two small children getting ready to join the ranks at CD and I am preparing to homeschool them because I do not like what I see at these schools.

Bill..
I won't pretend to alk for others, but I believe that the reason we are not hearing a lot from the public is because they believe the what is happening is appropriate and long overdue...CD has long lived beyond their means and spent arbitrarily on initiatives not connected to education, disputing contracts, floating bonds, and not keeping the ultimate goal in mind...those actions have come home to roost, and the piper must be paid..I sincerely hope lessons will be learned, leadership will evolve to serve the most important purpose, and our district will be better off...but IMHO what is currently occurring is GOOD and will ultimately benefit the students...
