Lower Paxton asked to delay vote on regs

UPDATE, 8 pm, 11/1/10 – SWAN withdrew its request for a delayed vote based on a response received from Lower Paxton Twp. manager George Wolfe. The local law discussed below most likely was adopted – I don't know for sure because Comcast channel 20 dropped its meeting coverage prior to the vote.
____

Citizen group Stray Winds Area Neighbors (SWAN) has asked Lower Paxton officials to delay a vote on revised regulations for residential and commercial construction projects.

The proposal – referred to as the Subdivision and Land Development Ordinance of 2010 – is on the agenda for the Monday night’s meeting of the township supervisors at the Municipal Center, 7:30 pm.

The land-use legislation has been in the works for three years, and SWAN members have attended public meetings and offered written suggestions for potential revisions.

Before a final vote is taken, SWAN is seeking feedback from the township’s engineering firm that the group’s recommendations were considered.

"Our review appears to show that none of SWAN's recommended definition changes were adopted," said Eric Epstein, the group's chairman, in an e-mail to township officials. He also noted that some design standards require further clarification.

Another item up for a vote at the meeting is a 1,400-seat sanctuary proposed by Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church.
____

Supervisors meeting agenda for Monday, Nov. 1, 2010.

To watch the meeting on TV, tune into Comcast channel 20 or Verizon channel 22.

Lower Paxton watchdog, Oct. 2010

Below are highlights from recent Lower Paxton Township meetings:

Initial earth moving is expected to start soon in Brightbill Park for the Dauphin County Heroes Grove, a tribute to the county's military veterans, law enforcement officers, firefighters and other emergency responders. The tribute will feature an amphitheater in a one-acre grove donated by Lower Paxton Township near the Friendship Community Center.

Township officials continued discussions on a proposed storm sewer project in Linglestown that could destroy a historic spring.

Property owner Michael Pinci presented documentation identifying the spring on his property as a historical site. After a heated discussion between Pinci and his neighbors, a township staff member offered a solution that appeared to satisfy all concerned.

The township is awaiting state approval to move forward with the revised plan.

The township supervisors approved a bond refinancing that is expected to save $318,000.

Work has begun on the 2011 township budget, and tentatively no property-tax increase is planned. A final draft budget will be reviewed at the Nov. 9 workshop meeting.

Free e-recycling available in Dauphin County

Dauphin County has opened a full-time electronics recycling program instead of holding a couple Saturday events each year.

I recently went to the center to recycle computer monitors, keyboards and other small electronic gizmos and gadgets. To save time when you go, be sure to make a list of items that you are recycling.

For another angle, CLICK HERE for a column about the writer's first trip to the e-recycling center. It's a good read.

CLICK HERE for directions to the facility located just off Cameron Street in south Harrisburg. It's in the same area as the Harrisburg incinerator plant.
