Saturday's big events – Soup and Sales

Linglestown firefighters make darn good soup!

My favorite food event has rolled around again!

Linglestown Fire Company's famous kettle-cooked chicken corn soup sale will be held this Saturday, Oct. 27 from 11 am until the soup is sold out.

The soup, which is available for eat-in or take out, is prepared by the firefighters behind the firehouse over an open wood fire in large iron kettles. Hey, you got to try this stuff. It's unbelievable!

After chowing down on yummy soup, consider heading to a huge indoor yard sale at Central Dauphin High School that runs from 8 am to 2 pm in back of the school in the school cafeteria. All proceeds go to Hershey Medical Center's Four Diamonds Fund that helps families with children with cancer.

Fire damages Linglestown apartment building

Linglestown, Colonial Park and Progress fire companies responded to an attic fire at a small apartment building on Blue Grass Avenue located near the Turkey Hill convenience store.

My wife and I spotted the fire trucks while on a walk to Amelia's Grocery Outlet to get a free copy of The Paxton Herald.

The arrow in the photo below points to one of the holes opened in the roof by firefighters. Click on the photo and map to view larger versions.

According to The Patriot-News, a construction worker was injured in the fire. CLICK HERE for more details from Linglestown Fire Company.

Linglestown firefighters appreciated

Linglestown Fire Company members worked into the wee hours of the morning last Wednesday fighting a house fire on Rockford Drive near Linglestown.

Gazette reader Jason Mansure passed along the following words of appreciation for the volunteer firefighters who responded to the emergency call:

I am completely impressed and appreciative of the hard work the responding emergency team had accomplished. Within minutes the sky that was filled with raging orange and yellow flames seemed to be under control. I realize a lot of these brave men and women are volunteers and I hope they know how much they are appreciated.

Every year during the holidays these same brave men and women come to different neighborhoods in our area and help spread the holiday spirit with gifts and their time for the neighborhood children, including my two girls.

Fire equipment paraded in Linglestown

Check out the video to see scenes from the Dauphin County Firemen's Association parade held in Linglestown on June 13, 2009.

To see the firefighting equipment that appeared in the parade, CLICK HERE for photos taken by Linglestown resident Joe Murphy.

Several hundred people lined the parade route to look at the long line of trucks and floats. Some people were displeased that the road closures along the parade route blocked them from getting to their homes, according to comments posted on the Gazette.

I walked the parade route shooting video and passing out invitations to the benefit concert that will be held at Linglestown Fire Company on Friday, June 26.

Lower Paxton home destroyed by fire

The home of orthopedic surgeon Rex Herbert on Olde Salem Road most likely is a total loss due to a fire that broke out early this evening, according to WHTM ABC-27. The smoke was visible in Linglestown, and I drove by the scene on my way to a 7 pm meeting. Fire crews, including Linglestown Fire Company, were still on the scene at 9 pm.
